History of You: The Rise of the Commercial Internet from Netscape to the Present. // TECH 111

Aaron Cohen, Adjunct Professor, NYU

Thursday, January 12th from 7:30 - 9:00 pm

Do you know what the first portal was? Do you know how Prodigy made money? Anytime you are innovating it is important to know what predecessors tried and why they succeeded or failed.

This fun event will be a fast-paced, highly interactive experience about the first 18 years since Netscape's first browser was released in August of 1994. The lecture is designed to uncover the truth about this period of enormous economic and cultural upheaval. These two decades have changed our world in ways historians have barely begun to study.

Participants should come equipped to share their earliest memories of email, instant messaging, photography, search and a variety of other massively adopted behaviors. The class format will be social in nature. You will meet some new people and share your personal history as a method to help all of us understand the birth of the digital revolution.

*Please note that the ticket price includes a free beer at the event.

Aaron Cohen teaches a semester long version of this class at New York University. He was the CEO of MenuPages, AnyClip, and Bolt. His career in digital working for a company called Time Inc. with a hot new technology called the cd-rom.
